Is temp work worth it?

All work is worthwhile, isn’t it? The answer of course is yes, even if the job doesn’t pay well and the work isn’t exactly what you want to do.  This is especially true when the economy is as bad as it is today. Any job is better than no job considering how difficult it is to even get an interview let alone an offer. It used to be that employers had a hard time filling some positions but that really isn’t the case today.  There are some industries, like the medical industry, that need employees but these jobs usually need a particular skill level and education that takes time to get.  So what about temporary jobs, temp jobs,  is that something that you have thought about doing.
You probably have thought about temp work and decided against it for a number of reasons.
  • Little or no benefits
  • No job security
  • Walking into a job where you don’t exactly know what you are going to do
  • You can be let go of a job without any explanation
  • No raises
The premise of temporary jobs is that you will only work in this position for a short while although I have seen temp workers stay on an assignment for years before eventually becoming a full time employee. Not every temp job leads to full time employment and that is understandable because a lot of employers have a need for someone to do work on a task that wouldn’t take forever, this gives them the flexibility to add workers without putting them on the payroll.
Temp work can be a lifesaver especially if your unemployment runs out and you need the money quickly.  There are other positives to temp work like the experience you get by working for other companies. You may also meet folks that you can use as a reference or they may be someone to add to your personal network.

Offline Job Searching

Whenever you need information on just about any subject you usually don’t have to look any further than the internet. It is really difficult to find a subject or even a question (even the craziest question) that stumps the World Wide Web. Now it might not be the correct answer all the time but you will find information that is most of the time helpful. That’s why most folks seeking job finding advice spend so much time the internet.  But the problem is that most people spend all their time searching the internet for jobs ads and career advice but you can’t forget about doing offline job searching.
Probably one of the most important aspects of looking for a job or career is networking. It is discussed quite a bit and for good reason, it is very helpful when looking for a job. Networking requires that you meet people who have similar career interests in the hope of finding out about possible job openings and keeping abreast of things going on in your field.  The web can be helpful in finding folks that you may be able to contact through social media and forums but speaking to someone in person has added benefits of putting a face to a name.
Another offline job searching activity is attending job fairs. While job fairs might not work for everyone and the field that they are trying to get in. if you do get a chance to attend one make the most of it. Even if you don’t get an interview you can find out who is hiring and might also find someone to add to your job network.
Believe it or not there are still want ads in the newspaper, there aren’t as many as there used to be but they are still there. So it wouldn’t take long to check them out and who knows you might find something.

Job hunting and life reevaluation

Let’s say you have been unemployed for quite a while now and you don’t think that you have a chance at finding another job. What are your options? Keep plugging away till something comes up or are you about to quit looking. Of course you can’t quit searching for a job because you need the money to survive and unemployment insurance will only last so long. But then again you don’t want keep looking because the sense of futility in looking for work is weighing heavily on you. There just aren’t any jobs for you and if there are you can’t find them. You are in a tough position along with millions of other people and there doesn’t seem to be any easy answers. As difficult as looking for work in a bad economy is you know you have to keep trying.
Maybe it is time reevaluate how you are going about looking for work. Plus you have to refresh your spirit which has probably taken a beating over the months that you have been looking for a job.
Creativity isn’t always easy for some folks and when you try to combine that with the task of job hunting it can really be quite a chore. But creativity along with dreaming can bring along some of the best ideas that you will ever have.  Creativity comes from an open mind that doesn’t easily reject ideas because at first glance they don’t appear to be worth much.  We all have ideas and yes some of them won’t work but there are some that can come to fruition.
Stress and anxiety are often companions of long job searches. They are a burden to your general health and they are a detriment to your ability to find work.  Controlling stress isn’t easy but very important to your health whether you are looking for a job or not. That spirit or enthusiasm that you once had when you started looking for work has been beaten down by stress and anxiety.  That has to stop. Regular exercise and eating right are the first things that you can do to control stress and if that isn’t enough then you might want to check with your doctor who would be able to make other suggestions that you should follow through on.

Tips dealing with unemployment

You have worked hard all your life and at no time did you ever think that you would be out of work, unemployed. Sure you know people who have been laid off or fired but that wasn’t going to happen to you and even if it did you would find a job quickly because a hard worker who is dedicated will always find employment.  Of course that might be true when the economy is good and unemployment is low but what about now when there are record number of folks looking for works not just for a few weeks but months even years. It is tough for anybody no matter how much experience you have or if your references are wonderful it is still difficult to find work.  It’s a lot to deal with but you can do it.  Here are few things to consider.

  • You aren’t the only one who has been affected by this severe economy. Millions of folks are dealing with the same issues that you are dealing with and the most important thing to remember is that millions are also surviving this malaise and finding work.
  • If you have a regular exercise workout, great stay on it. But if you don’t then you should definitely start. Exercise and proper diet equals a healthy lifestyle, which is what you need to fight off illness and more importantly stress.  So do yourself a favor and start exercising.
  • While you are unemployed you should remember that looking for a job is work. In fact it is hard work that will have a definite payout, a job. So make sure schedule your time as if you have a regular forty hour a week job.
  • Handling stress is an important part of life whether you are unemployed or not. If you let stresses get to you then your productivity and possible your health will be greatly affected. Besides exercise you might also want to look at learning yoga or tai chi, both are great ways to deal with stress as well as buying stress lowering CDs.
  • Don’t forget about doing the things that you love such as hobbies. Life goes on whether you are working or not. If you give up things that you enjoy doing you are just asking for stress and anxiety to eat away at you.
  • Be flexible when looking for work. Of course there are the tried and true methods of looking for employment but don’t turn a deaf ear to innovative ideas that aren’t the norm.
Unemployment is a difficult time for anyone, but with the proper attitude, healthy lifestyle and determination you will be able to get through it.
