Tips dealing with unemployment

You have worked hard all your life and at no time did you ever think that you would be out of work, unemployed. Sure you know people who have been laid off or fired but that wasn’t going to happen to you and even if it did you would find a job quickly because a hard worker who is dedicated will always find employment.  Of course that might be true when the economy is good and unemployment is low but what about now when there are record number of folks looking for works not just for a few weeks but months even years. It is tough for anybody no matter how much experience you have or if your references are wonderful it is still difficult to find work.  It’s a lot to deal with but you can do it.  Here are few things to consider.

  • You aren’t the only one who has been affected by this severe economy. Millions of folks are dealing with the same issues that you are dealing with and the most important thing to remember is that millions are also surviving this malaise and finding work.
  • If you have a regular exercise workout, great stay on it. But if you don’t then you should definitely start. Exercise and proper diet equals a healthy lifestyle, which is what you need to fight off illness and more importantly stress.  So do yourself a favor and start exercising.
  • While you are unemployed you should remember that looking for a job is work. In fact it is hard work that will have a definite payout, a job. So make sure schedule your time as if you have a regular forty hour a week job.
  • Handling stress is an important part of life whether you are unemployed or not. If you let stresses get to you then your productivity and possible your health will be greatly affected. Besides exercise you might also want to look at learning yoga or tai chi, both are great ways to deal with stress as well as buying stress lowering CDs.
  • Don’t forget about doing the things that you love such as hobbies. Life goes on whether you are working or not. If you give up things that you enjoy doing you are just asking for stress and anxiety to eat away at you.
  • Be flexible when looking for work. Of course there are the tried and true methods of looking for employment but don’t turn a deaf ear to innovative ideas that aren’t the norm.
Unemployment is a difficult time for anyone, but with the proper attitude, healthy lifestyle and determination you will be able to get through it.

This is a great blog for people my age, being displaced for a variety of reasons. I wanted to mention that I, at 50 years old, have gone back to school. Later this year I will be a certified Pharmacy Technician and it looks like a job that I will like. Happily, there are 2 other women my age, (1 man left for a serious job offer), and all the other are from 20 to in their 40's. This is great! I was fearing being surrounded by teenagers, I can stay at home for that! I have a student grant, a student loan and living expenses from under the unemployment benefits umbrella. Yes, learning is a little harder, but there are also extreme learning tools out there, even if it is watching a math formula worked out on Youtube, the help is out there. If we are tough enough to have made it this far, we are tough enough for school . . . again.
