Considering today’s job market the question on how to become gainfully employed can’t be easily answered. The economy has been bad for several years and quite frankly there doesn’t seem to be any letup in the high unemployment rate and the large number of folks that are long time unemployed. But like any time, good or bad, there are always times that you must do to become gainfully employed. Although there aren’t any guarantees of finding a job you certainly raise your chances of finding work by following a few key steps.
- Before you even start to look for a job you must know what you want to do. Of course there may be a little leeway in this area but you should be rather certain as to what type of job and industry that you want to be in. if you have recently lost your job this may be the perfect time to move into another field, do the research on the pay scale and whether you would want to do this type of work for any period of time.
- Have a resume ready, especially one that you can change to fit the company that you are applying for. The same goes for the cover letter. Don’t send out form letters to potential employees.
- Networking has gotten a lot of press over the past few years as a significant career tool and with good reason, it works. It is a good idea even after you have found your job to continue to build your network for any future employment searches.
- Become an expert on internet job searches. It used to be that all the job want ads were in the papers, of course now the vast majority of job ads are on the internet in large employment sites and even company websites will have listings of job opening.
- Remember that looking for a job is a job, so keep a schedule of activities like job searches and networking.
While it wouldn’t be easy to find employment and really it never is, keep a positive attitude and consistent work schedule to ensure your best chances of finding work.
