sell yourself to a potential employer

Advertising is everywhere for everything. Sell, sell, sell! That's what you are doing when you are looking for a job.

Remember when searching for a job you are really selling yourself to a potential employer. And when ever you sell something you need to market it. Your resume is your sales flyer, make sure to make positive, highlighting your most important accomplishments and skills. Of course it goes without saying that you should be honest about yourself. Your reputation would be tarnished if you were caught in a lie. Remember the resume is your initial introduction.

Your appearance and how you present yourself in a interview is as important as the resume. Not looking professional or appearing untidy in front of a human resources representative gives a black mark against you that you may never recover from. You know what they say you only get one chance at a first impression.

And let it be known to everyone that you know that you are available ( for sale ) as an employee. Someone might be in the market.

online job search for older workers

Millions of older unemployed workers are using the internet to look for work. They are the fastest growing segment of the population doing their job search online according to
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/02/26/seniors-take-job-hunt-to-the-web/

And why shouldn’t they be using the internet? The computer and the web are tools to be used, not some mysterious invention to baffle older people. It’s like anything that you learn whether it’s driving a car or riding a bike, it takes time to master it. It might be intimidating at first but after a while it takes the same amount of effort as changing the channels on a TV.

And everyone will have to computer savvy because the conventional ways of looking for a job have changed. Most companies no longer rely on newspapers. They have their own websites and use jobsites to find the ideal job candidate.

tips for finding jobs for older workers

1. Update your job skills. You might have worked at a place for thirty years doing the same job and you were a master at it. You get laid off and find out that the skill that you were great at doesn't apply at any other company. Now you have to learn all new skills to be competitive in the job market. Don't wait till you are laid off. Start taking classes in areas that will make you marketable.

2. You have met a lot of people over the course of a lifetime, some are business associates and some are friends and some are a little of both. Don't be embarrassed to ask for help when you need it. If a friend asked you for help, you wouldn't turn him/her away would you?

3. On a interview stress not only your tangible skills but also the skills that come with working for many years, such as communication skills and general business knowledge.

4. Tired of working for someone else, then start working for yourself. This could be tough to do, but in these difficult times, it may be worth taking a chance.
