tips for finding jobs for older workers

1. Update your job skills. You might have worked at a place for thirty years doing the same job and you were a master at it. You get laid off and find out that the skill that you were great at doesn't apply at any other company. Now you have to learn all new skills to be competitive in the job market. Don't wait till you are laid off. Start taking classes in areas that will make you marketable.

2. You have met a lot of people over the course of a lifetime, some are business associates and some are friends and some are a little of both. Don't be embarrassed to ask for help when you need it. If a friend asked you for help, you wouldn't turn him/her away would you?

3. On a interview stress not only your tangible skills but also the skills that come with working for many years, such as communication skills and general business knowledge.

4. Tired of working for someone else, then start working for yourself. This could be tough to do, but in these difficult times, it may be worth taking a chance.
